The next software update of Amazon’s popular voice-controlled AI device Alexa, which has been eagerly awaited by many, has fallen behind the schedule, and it is now confirmed that it will not be released on its initial date of February 26. Thanks to an article in The Washington Post, it turned out that the injudiciousness was caused by the AI having serious problems of delivering correct responses during internal assessment.
As disclosed by an anonymous Amazon source, the new natural-sounding conversational Alexa, a replacement of the currently available one, will not be accessible to the users earlier than the end of March. This fact once more underscores that the performance of the AI assistant still poses a challenge. This in fact, comes on the heels of a similar promise 18 months ago highlighting Amazon’s intention to deploy a generative chatbot-like version of Alexa after the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Amazon Reactions to the Delay
In spite of negative press feedback, a spokesperson from Amazon issued a statement emphasizing company’s lack of readiness to communicate particular strategic actions. But said company is looking forward to presenting some updates from the Alexa team on the twenty-sixth of February.
The delay further confirms the problem tech companies are now facing in their businesses, the integration of artificial intelligence into consumer appliances. Given how much money was spent on the development of artificial intelligence, building an effective and error-free hands-free assistant is still very far from being an easy task.
Promising AI Use for Different Economic Sectors
Amazon is not the only company that has been facing difficulties in trying to carry out AI-based revamps. Just recently, Apple had to apologize due to the fact that a function of the iPhone, an AI news summary, was heavily criticized by the users for containing false statements. Also, it has been reported that Apple is behind its original schedule concerning the improvement of Siri, another application of AI, and that this delay may extend to ISO 18.5 update expected to be released in May.
Presently, while others see improvement in AI applications, the functionalization of such tools to the ordinary people in form of products faces several challenges every degree of which is valid, from precision to the cost of carrying-out large generative AI models. In fact, previous reports showed that Amazon has considered different revenue models for an AI equipped Alexa, such as subscription fees and a percentage of every ecommerce transaction completed. However, delays are more of technical ones rather than due to the costs being incurred.
Subscription Of Alexa.
There is growing anticipation that Amazon is going to offer a subscription model for all those features of the Alexa that are now powered by AI. According to some internal sources, these bonuses of the greatly anticipated new age Alexa will contain features like personal interaction, conversation revisit and more importantly facilitation in food, and even ride, requests. Initially it was suggested that these would be provided for free upto a certain period albeit there are avails if the users would be required to subscribe for continuation.
This has caused reactions from the users of Alexa such that many are not willing to pay more for services that they are used to getting free servicing. Some even went further to suggest that Amazon has been diluting the performance of Alexa over the time so as to make the already present users go for the costlier premium AI service.
Planning for Alexa’s Future
In this case, Amazon is organizing a special event where they will be sharing the updates on Alexa on the 26th of February. It is still not clear whether the company will announce ‘Alexa AI push’ during such press conference event, however, it is known that the customers are interested in learning what changes are about to appear.
With Google and its Gemini, and Apple’s rejuvenated Siri refreshed many are taking place around the integration of the next level Alexa; a device that can potentially change language interactions of their diehard Alexa users. It is still unclear, however, if many users would consider the new Alexa worth the wait—and the other two words as possible addition of the sentence remain to be seen.
